This is one of the biggest museums in Japan that provides visitors with the experience of seeing, touching and learning all about coal mining work, life in a mining community and coal itself. There is also an underground exhibition room where visitors experience a real coal-mine driftway, and the Yubari Coal Outcrop, a natural monument designated by the Hokkaido government.
The Yellow Handkerchief of Happiness Memorial Park
This is the location where The Yellow Handkerchief of Happiness, a masterpiece movie about the coal-mining community in Yubari, was filmed. The movie set remains as it was during the shooting. It also has an exhibition room that is filled with yellow message cards that have been left by visitors.
